Things & Possession
- 1 これ・それ・あれ kore / sore / are this / that / that over there Three words for pointing at things — they stand alone, and a particle such as は, も or を comes right after.
- 2 この・その・あの ＋ N kono / sono / ano + N this N / that N / that N over there The "this / that" that attaches straight to a noun — は can never follow them.
- 3 そうです sou desu That's right The 'yes' answer to a yes/no question.
- 4 そうじゃありません sou ja arimasen That's not right The 'no' answer to a yes/no question.
- 5 だれのですか／Nのです dare no desu ka / N no desu Whose is it? / It is N's The の for asking "whose?" and answering "mine / his" in short.
- 6 〜ですか、〜ですか ~ desu ka, ~ desu ka Is it A or B? A question offering two choices.
