だれのですか/Nのです (dare no desu ka / N no desu) — Whose is it? / It is N's

The の for asking "whose?" and answering "mine / his" in short.

Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

だれ + の + N + ですか
N + の [N] + です

Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

Meaning

  • To ask, use だれ (who) + の = だれの (whose): これはだれのかばんですか (Whose bag is this?).
  • In the answer you need not repeat the word "bag" — の itself stands in for the thing: 私のです (It is mine), 田中さんのです (It is Tanaka's).
  • In Nepali too we say "कस्को हो?" — "मेरो हो" without repeating "झोला"; Japanese works exactly the same way.

Versus what you know

In Lesson 1 we learned that の answers "whose?" (先生の本 = the teacher's book).
