    〜なくはない (~naku wa nai) — it's not that ~ isn't (so) / ~ to some extent

A soft half-yes for when you hesitate to say 'yes': 'it's not that it isn't…'.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb Vない [い] + く + はない
    い-adj い-adj [い] + く + なく + はない
    な-adj な-adj + で + なく + はない
    N N + が + なく + はない

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

On a break a colleague says: 'The boss is so strict, I'm going to quit.' You sometimes feel the same, but don't want to agree all the way: 「その気持ち、わからなくはないよ」— 'it's not that I don't understand how you feel.'

    Meaning

「〜なくはない」says 'yes, to some extent' instead of a full yes, and 「が・けど」often follows to add a 'but…'.

    How to attach

    • To attach it: turn the 「ない」of a verb's ない-form into 「なく」(わからなく・行けなく) and add 「はない」
    • い-adjectives take 「くなく」(高くなく), な-adjectives 「でなく」(好きでなく), and nouns 「Nがなく」(時間がなくはない).
    • Put 「も」in place of 「は」— 「〜なくもない」— and it sounds even softer.

    Versus what you know

    • The difference from the previous 「〜ないものでもない」: that one is stiff and written, verbs only, about a future possibility under a condition
    • 「なくはない」is light, fine in speech, attaches to verbs, adjectives and nouns, and can also describe a present feeling or state.
    • N3It means much the same as the 「〜ないことはない」.

    Watch out

The key rule: it only ever gives a half-yes, so it clashes with firm words like 「絶対に」or「必ず」.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) わかる = to understand → わからない = don't understand → turn 「ない」 into 「なく」: わからなく → 「はない」 = it's not that I don't understand → meaning: I understand to some extent.

    じかんがなくはないが、きょうはゆっくりやすみたい。

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 時間がない = there's no time → 時間がなく → 「はない」 = it's not that there's no time (there's a little) → 「が」 = but → then the real wish: 休みたい.

    歩いて行けなくはないけど、駅から30分かかりますよ。
