〜に準じて (~ni junjite) — in accordance with / treated as equal to
Not exactly the same, but treated as equal to a standard and handled the same way — the form of regulations and forms.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- When you hand in papers at the ward office or read a job ad, you see: 「パスポートまたはそれに準ずる身分証明書」— 'a passport, or an ID treated as equal to it.'
- This is the language of regulations, job ads and official documents.
Meaning
「準じる」means: not exactly the same, but regarded as the same level and handled that way. So 「〜に準じて」says: there is a standard (正社員, 規定, a previous case), and something else is treated as equal to it and handled accordingly.
How to attach
Attach N + 「に準じて」, and before a noun 「に準じた N」; in rules and forms you also often see the older 「に準ずる N」.
Versus what you know
- The difference from the previous 「〜に則って」: 則って follows the rule itself directly
- 準じて says 'this rule is really for something else, but let's apply it here the same way' — like giving part-timers holidays under the full-time staff rules.
- N2「〜に基づいて」only shows a basis; it doesn't carry the 'treat as equal' feeling.
Watch out
The key rule: what comes in front is something that serves as a standard, and what follows is handling or applying (扱う・支給する・対応する) — a person's feelings or wishes (気持ちに準じて) can't go there.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
アルバイトの交通費も、社員の規定に準じて支払われます。
アルバイトのこうつうひも、しゃいんのきていにじゅんじてしはらわれます。
Part-timers' travel costs are also paid in line with the rules for employees.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 社員の規定 = the rules for employees (a standard originally made for others) → 「に準じて」= treating it as equal to that → 支払われます = is paid.
今回の事故は、前回の例に準じて対応することになった。
こんかいのじこは、ぜんかいのれいにじゅんじてたいおうすることになった。
It was decided to handle this accident the same way as the previous case.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 前回の例 = the previous case → 「に準じて」= treating it the same as that → 対応することになった = it was decided to handle it that way.
契約社員にも、正社員に準じた休みが与えられる。
けいやくしゃいんにも、せいしゃいんにじゅんじたやすみがあたえられる。
Contract employees are also given time off on par with full-time staff.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 正社員 = full-time staff (the standard) → a noun (休み) comes after, so 「に準じた」 → 正社員に準じた休み = time off on par with full-time staff → 与えられる = are given.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「パートの給料も、社員の規定に__決めます。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: A verb (決めます) follows.
N + に準じて + verb. 規定に準じて決めます = we decide in line with the rules. 「準じた」and 「準じる」need a noun after them; 「準じての」also only goes before a noun.
In which sentence is 「に準じて」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Is the thing in front a standard, or a feeling?
Standards like rules, a staff category or a past case go before 準じて. A feeling isn't a standard — say 「友達の気持ちを考えて」.
What does 「AにBが準じる」mean?
💡 Hint: Remember 「パスポートまたはそれに準ずる身分証明書」.
準じる = not exactly the same, but treated as equal. 'Compare to judge' = 照らす, 'follow the rule itself directly' = 則る.
