〜を前提として (~o zentei to shite) — on the premise of / assuming
Building a whole plan on a condition you accept from the start — 'this will be the case'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Someone in Japan says seriously: 「結婚を前提にお付き合いしてください」— 'please go out with me with marriage as the premise from the start.'
- It isn't only for news and business — as the example shows, it works in everyday talk too.
Meaning
「前提」is the base you accept as given before starting something — 'this will be the case'. So 「〜を前提として」says: the whole plan or action stands on that condition or assumption.
How to attach
- Attach N + 「を前提として」; with a clause use 「Vこと + を前提として」(返すことを前提として); before a noun 「を前提とした N」.
- The shorter 「〜を前提に(して)」is heard just as often.
Versus what you know
- The difference from the previous 「〜を踏まえて」: 踏まえて considers results or information that already exist
- 前提として usually takes something that hasn't happened yet but is assumed to happen (marriage, paying money back, an earthquake) and makes it the starting condition.
Watch out
The key rule: what goes in front is a condition set from the start, so what follows is a deliberate action built on it (付き合う・貸す・計画を立てる・募集する) — something that just happened by chance, like 「雨を前提として傘を忘れた」, doesn't fit.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
二人は、結婚を前提として付き合っている。
ふたりは、けっこんをぜんていとしてつきあっている。
The two of them are dating with marriage in mind.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 結婚 = marriage (it hasn't happened yet, but it's assumed it will) → 「を前提として」= treating it as the starting condition → 付き合っている = are in a relationship.
この仕事は、日本語で会話できることを前提として募集しています。
このしごとは、にほんごでかいわできることをぜんていとしてぼしゅうしています。
We are recruiting for this job on the premise that you can hold a conversation in Japanese.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 日本語で会話できる = can hold a conversation in Japanese (a clause) → 「こと」 turned it into a noun → 「を前提として」= treating that as a condition → 募集しています = we are looking for people.
地震が起きることを前提とした訓練が、毎年行われている。
じしんがおきることをぜんていとしたくんれんが、まいとしおこなわれている。
Drills that assume an earthquake will happen are held every year.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 地震が起きること = the fact that an earthquake will happen → a noun (訓練) comes after, so 「を前提とした」 → 前提とした訓練 = drills done on that assumption → 毎年行われている = are held every year.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「お金を返す__を前提として、友達に貸した。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The word that turns a verb into a 'fact' (noun).
Dictionary form + こと + を前提として. 返すことを前提として = on the premise that it's paid back. The other words don't make sense here.
In which sentence is 「を前提として」unnatural?
💡 Hint: A condition set from the start and an action built on it — which one lacks that?
Forgetting an umbrella isn't a deliberate action, and yesterday's rain isn't a condition set in advance. The others have both a premise and a plan.
「彼とは結婚__付き合っています。」— which is right?
💡 Hint: The marriage hasn't happened yet — it's an assumed condition.
結婚を前提として = with marriage as the premise. 踏まえて considers information that already exists; 即して and 照らして take reality or a yardstick.
