Grow with Kitty

Type in Japanese, kana, romaji or English. Every word and grammar point from N5 to N1.

ただし、〜はこの限りでない (tadashi, ~ wa kono kagiri de nai) — however, this does not apply to ~

The exception clause right after a rule — 'in this case the rule above does not apply.'

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N …。ただし、N + は + この限りでない
    Verb …。ただし、V普通形 + 場合は + この限りでない

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • In apartment rules, shop notices or job ads, two sentences often come as a pair: first the rule, then 「ただし、〜はこの限りではありません」.
    • On a restaurant door, for example: 「ペットの同伴はできません。ただし、盲導犬はこの限りではありません」— 'pets are not allowed; however, this does not apply to guide dogs.'

    Meaning

Here 「この」= the rule just stated, 「限り」= its boundary, 「でない」= not inside it — so the meaning is 'the rule above does not cover this'.

    How to attach

To build it, after the rule sentence write 「ただし、」, then 「N は」for a thing or 「〜場合は」for a situation, and end with 「この限りでない」(「この限りではありません」in a polite notice).

    Watch out

    • Careful: seeing 「限り」, don't think of the N2 「〜に限り」('only ~') or 「〜限り」('as long as ~') and read it as 'only this' — it is a separate fixed phrase, and the meaning is the opposite: for the exception, the rule is lifted.
    • The key rule: there must always be a rule, ban or duty right before it — you can't use it after a personal preference like 'I like apples'.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    ペットの同伴はできません。ただし、盲導犬はこの限りではありません。

    ペットのどうはんはできません。ただし、もうどうけんはこのかぎりではありません。

Pets are not allowed. However, this does not apply to guide dogs.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) ペットの同伴はできません = you can't bring pets (the rule) → 「ただし、」= however → 盲導犬は = guide dogs, though (N は) → 「この限りではありません」= the rule above doesn't apply to them, i.e. they may come in.

    受講料は返金しない。ただし、講座が中止になった場合はこの限りでない。

    じゅこうりょうはへんきんしない。ただし、こうざがちゅうしになったばあいはこのかぎりでない。

Course fees are not refunded. However, this does not apply if the course is canceled.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 受講料は返金しない = fees are not refunded (the rule) → 「ただし、」 → 講座が中止になった場合は = in case the course is canceled (〜場合は) → 「この限りでない」= the rule doesn't apply, i.e. the money is refunded.

    提出書類は返却しない。ただし、本人の申し出がある場合はこの限りでない。

    ていしゅつしょるいはへんきゃくしない。ただし、ほんにんのもうしでがあるばあいはこのかぎりでない。

Submitted documents are not returned. However, this does not apply if the applicant requests it.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 提出書類は返却しない = submitted documents are not returned (the rule) → 「ただし、」 → 本人の申し出がある場合は = if the person themself asks → 「この限りでない」= the rule is lifted, and you get the documents back.
