〜こととなる (~koto to naru) — it has been decided that ~ / ~ will now happen
The official version of N3 「ことになる」— 'it has been settled' in announcements, notices and the news.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- In March you get an email like this from a colleague: 「このたび、4月1日付で大阪支社へ異動することとなりました」— 'I will be transferred to the Osaka branch from April 1.'
- Or on the door of your favourite shop: 「3月末で閉店することとなりました」.
- You will also hear 「〜こととなった」a lot on NHK news.
Meaning
- It means the same as the N3 「〜ことになる」(転勤することになった) — 'it has been settled'; but 「と」gives it the voice of an official, written announcement.
- Japanese people use 「なる」even for their own decisions, to sound modest without pushing 'I decided!'.
How to attach
Attach 「こととなる」to a verb's dictionary form or ない form, mostly in the past: 「こととなりました」.
Versus what you know
- The difference from the previous point 「こととする」is this: 「する」= we ourselves decided; 「なる」= others or circumstances decided, things moved that way by themselves.
- The company decides transfers, so it is 「異動することとなりました」.
Watch out
The key rule: this is formal language for emails, notices and the news — on LINE with a friend say 「引っ越すことになったよ」, not 「こととなった」.

Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「来月から、家賃が値上げされる__となりました。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: The と version of N3 「〜ことになる」.
Dictionary form + こととなる: 値上げされることとなりました = the rent is going up. 「もの」「わけ」「はず」+ となりました don't work.
「(社員のメール)会社の決定により、私は4月から名古屋支店に異動する__。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Who decided — 'I' or the company?
会社の決定 = the company decided → こととなりました. 「こととしました」says 'I decided', which clashes with the sentence; 「ものとします」is a rule and 「ことにしています」a habit.
In which sentence is 「こととなる」unnatural?
💡 Hint: A formal announcement, or chatting with a friend?
こととなる is formal written language. With a friend, say 「引っ越すことになったよ」.
