〜におかれましては (~ni okaremashite wa) — (as for) you — with the highest respect
The highest-level keigo for making a respected person or organisation the topic of a sentence.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- A formal letter from a Japanese company, after 「拝啓」and the seasonal greeting, almost always begins like this: 「貴社におかれましては、ますますご清栄のこととお慶び申し上げます」— 'we are delighted that your company continues to prosper.'
- On NHK news, when speaking about the Emperor, you also hear 「天皇陛下におかれましては…」.
- It appears only in letters, greeting cards and ceremony speeches.
Meaning
「〜におかれましては」is one level higher: 'おく' has been made into the honorific 'おかれる', so it raises not the topic but the person or organisation itself — 'speaking of you, sir…'.
How to attach
- Attach 「におかれましては」straight after the name of a respected person or organisation (皆様・貴社・先生・お客様).
- What follows is usually their health or situation (ご健勝のことと…) or a polite request to them (ご自愛ください).
Versus what you know
N2At N2 you learned 「〜につきましては」and 「〜におきまして」— polite forms of 'about' and 'in/at' that mark a topic or a place.
Watch out
The key rule: it is only for respected people or organisations on the other side — you can't use it for your own company (弊社におかれましては ×) or for a thing (料金におかれましては ×).
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
貴社におかれましては、ますますご発展のこととお喜び申し上げます。
きしゃにおかれましては、ますますごはってんのこととおよろこびもうしあげます。
We are delighted that your company continues to grow.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 貴社 = your company → 「におかれましては」= as regards you (highest respect) → then their situation: ご発展のこと = continuing to grow → お喜び申し上げます = we express our delight (an opening line of a letter).
皆様におかれましては、寒い日が続きますので、どうぞご自愛ください。
みなさまにおかれましては、さむいひがつづきますので、どうぞごじあいください。
As the cold days continue, we hope you will all take good care of yourselves.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 皆様 = all of you → 「におかれましては」 → then a polite request to them: ご自愛ください = please take care of your health (a closing line of a letter).
先生におかれましては、お変わりなくお過ごしのことと存じます。
せんせいにおかれましては、おかわりなくおすごしのこととぞんじます。
I trust that you are keeping as well as ever, Sensei.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 先生 = teacher → 「におかれましては」 → then a guess about their situation: お変わりなくお過ごし = keeping well, as before → のことと存じます = I trust it is so.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「貴社__、ますますご清栄のこととお慶び申し上げます。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: Which particle after the noun?
N + におかれましては. 貴社におかれましては = as for your company. 「を」「で」and 「とられる」are not used in this form.
In which sentence is 「におかれましては」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Respect for the other side, or your own side?
におかれましては raises the other side; it can't go on your own company (弊社). Say 「弊社では、来月より…」.
「料金__、下記をご覧ください。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: 料金 is not a person — it's a topic.
The polite topic marker is 「につきましては」(N2). 「におかれましては」is only for a respected person or organisation; 「の段」「のほど」don't fit here.
