Lesson 35
Building sentences & passage grammar
- 1 並べ替えのコツ narabekae no kotsu how to solve the word-order (★) question Four pieces, one ★ — solve it with fixed pairs, who-modifies-whom, and connection forms.
- 2 文章の中の時制と条件 bunshō no naka no jisei to jōken tense and conditions inside a passage 「帰るとき」or「帰ったとき」? — a clause's tense is set by the main clause, not by 'now'.
- 3 視点をそろえる shiten o soroeru keeping one viewpoint Not 「友達がわたしに電話した」 but 「友達が電話してきた」 — tell it through 'my' eyes.
- 4 こ・そ・あ と は・が ko, so, a to wa, ga pointing words and は vs が in writing 「その母が」 or 「この母が」? 「店が」 or 「店は」? — in writing they follow their own rules.
- 5 接続表現の整理(N1) setsuzoku hyōgen no seiri (N1) connectives by job (N1) しかしながら・その反面・だからといって・それゆえ — the formal road signs of writing and news.
- 6 省略・言い換え・文体の統一 shōryaku, iikae, buntai no tōitsu leaving out, rephrasing and keeping one style Drop needless repetition, keep one style, and let the ideas flow in one order.

🔒
「入社して以来、_ _ ★ _ ことはない。」 — which piece goes in ★?
💡 Hint:Lock the pair number + たりとも first.
Order: 一日 たりとも 会社を 休んだ (ことはない). The ★ is the third slot = 会社を.
「日本に来る_、もっと日本語を勉強しておけばよかった。」 — fill the blank.
💡 Hint:Which one always takes the dictionary form 「来る」?
Dictionary form + 前に — I wish I had studied before coming (反実仮想 〜ばよかった). 後で needs the た-form; たら最後 and とはいえ don't fit the meaning.
「先週、国の友達から荷物が_。」 — which is natural from 'my' viewpoint?
💡 Hint:The parcel came toward me, and the subject is 荷物.
荷物が (subject) + passive + 〜てくる = 「送られてきた」 — it was sent my way. 送った and 送ってあげた need the sender as subject, and 送っていった points the wrong way.
「昨日、会社に新しい社員_入った。その人_ネパール出身だそうだ。」 — fill the blanks.
💡 Hint:New information, then something already mentioned.
The new employee appears for the first time → が; 「その人」 is already known and the sentence is about them → は.
「彼は仕事が速い。_、細かいミスが多い。」 — fill the blank.
💡 Hint:The good and bad sides of the same person.
「その反面」 = the other (opposite) side of the same thing. もしくは offers a choice, それゆえ gives a result, and そう is a pointing word, not a connective.
「この地域は冬に雪が多い。_、車のタイヤを替える必要がある。」 — fill the blank.
💡 Hint:Reason → result.
Lots of snow (reason) → tyres must be changed (result) → 「それゆえ」. それはさておき changes topic, さりとて needs 'even so, not …', ないしは offers a choice.
In a report: 「調査の結果、利用者の多くがサービスに不満を_。」 — fill the blank.
💡 Hint:Written, neutral, だ・である style.
A report uses the neutral 「〜ことが分かった」. 〜てくれた is emotional (and the wrong meaning), んですよ mixes in です・ます, and じゃん is casual speech.
「あのとき先輩に相談していれば、こんなことにはならなかった_。」 — fill the blank.
💡 Hint:Regret about something that didn't happen.
〜ていれば … ならなかったのに = 反実仮想 (I didn't ask, and trouble came). ため・ので give reasons, and かつ adds — it cannot end a sentence.
