    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

    • They fill news, editorials and city-office notices, and the exam asks which one goes in a gap in a paragraph.
    • Remember: speech says 「おまけに」「でも」, writing says 「かつ」「しかしながら」.

    Meaning

    • N1 adds harder, written ones to the same table — no new grammar, just new road signs.
    • Adding: 「かつ」 = written 'and also' (「安全かつ快適」).
    • Contrary: 「しかしながら」 = the formal しかし
    • 「とはいうものの・とはいえ」 = that's true, but…
    • 「だからといって・かといって・そうはいっても・さりとて」 = 'that doesn't mean …' — usually followed by 〜ない・〜わけにはいかない・〜わけではない; this is the one tested most.
    • Contrast: 「それに反して」 = the opposite fact about a different thing (prices fell, costs rose); 「その反面」 = the other side of the same thing (the city is convenient, but expensive).
    • Choice: 「もしくは・ないしは」 = formal または; 「ないしは」 can also mean 'from A to B' (「一週間ないし二週間」).
    • Rephrasing: 「いってみれば」 = putting it as a comparison.
    • Changing topic: 「それはさておき」 = leaving that aside, on to the main point.
    • Reason-conclusion: 「それゆえ・ゆえに」 = written だから・したがって.

    Versus what you know

N2At N2 you learned connectives such as 「しかも」「つまり」「ところが」「なお」 by job, plus 「おまけに」「ちなみに」「すなわち」.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    残業が多くて大変だ。だからといって、今すぐ会社を辞めるわけにはいかない。

    ざんぎょうがおおくてたいへんだ。だからといって、いますぐかいしゃをやめるわけにはいかない。

There's so much overtime it's tough. But that doesn't mean I can quit the company right now.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 文1 = the work is hard (you'd expect "so I'll quit") → 「だからといって」 = that doesn't mean → negative in 文2: 辞めるわけにはいかない.

    都会の生活は便利だ。その反面、家賃が高く、静かな場所が少ない。

    とかいのせいかつはべんりだ。そのはんめん、やちんがたかく、しずかなばしょがすくない。

City life is convenient. On the other hand, rent is high and quiet places are few.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) Same topic: 都会の生活 → the good side (便利) → 「その反面」 → the bad side (家賃が高い). To compare two different things, use 「それに反して」.

    この地域は高齢者が多い。それゆえ、バスの本数を減らす案には反対の声が強い。

    このちいきはこうれいしゃがおおい。それゆえ、バスのほんすうをへらすあんにははんたいのこえがつよい。

There are many elderly people in this area. For that reason, there is strong opposition to the plan to cut bus services.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 文1 = the cause (many elderly people) → 「それゆえ」 = the written form of だから → 文2 = the result (strong opposition) → news style.
