〜んがため (~n ga tame) — (determined) in order to ~, at any cost
A fierce will to reach one big goal, whatever it takes — sometimes with the criticism 'only for that'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
You read in a newspaper editorial: 「彼は選挙に勝たんがため、守れない約束まで口にした」— 'Just to win the election, he even made promises he can't keep.'
Meaning
- 「〜んがため」shows a fierce will to do whatever it takes for that one aim.
- It is old in style and charged with feeling — the goal is usually big (生きる・勝つ・家族を養う・夢をかなえる).
- It can carry criticism, as in 'only to make money'.
How to attach
- Take the ない-form, drop 「ない」, add 「んがため」: 勝たない → 勝たんがため, 養わない → 養わんがため
- 「する」becomes 「せんがため」
- You will also see 「んがために」; before a noun 「んがためのN」(売らんがための宣伝)
Versus what you know
It overlaps with 「べく」just before (both 'in order to', both written), but 「んがため」is older in style and more emotional.
Watch out
- As with 「べく」, the subject is the same in both halves and no command or request follows.
- Used for small daily things it sounds comic — 「お茶を飲まんがため台所へ行った」is wrong; say 「飲みに」or 「飲むために」.
