Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Say 「やりがいのある仕事がしたいです」at a job interview and a Japanese boss smiles.
Meaning
「Vます + がい」makes a noun — 'rewarding to do, worth doing': やりがい (worth doing), 生きがい (reason to live), 働きがい, 教えがい.
How to attach
- Drop ます from the ます-form + がい: やります → やり → やりがい
- Then 〜がいがある/がいがない, or 〜がいのある N (やりがいのある仕事).
Versus what you know
「かい」(甲斐) is the reward of effort; 「〜かいがあって」(勉強したかいがあって) tells of effort that paid off, while 「〜がい」says the activity itself is rewarding.
Watch out
Here it is voiced 「が」, not 「か」: やりがい ✅, やりかい ❌
