〜かいがあって (~kai ga atte) — the effort paid off (かいもなく = in vain)

The effort paid off — 「勉強したかいがあって、合格した」; if it didn't, 「かいもなく」.

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    Verb Vた/V辞書形 + かいがあって・かいがある
    N N + の + かいがあって・かいがある
    Verb Vた + かいもなく・かいがない
    N N + の + かいもなく・かいがない

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

The JLPT result is out — pass! 「毎日勉強したかいがあって、N2に合格できた」— 'studying every day paid off and I passed'.

    Meaning

    • 「かい」(甲斐) is the reward of effort, what your work gives back.
    • ① 「〜かいがあって」= the effort was worth it, a good result came.
    • ② 「〜かいもなく」= the effort was in vain, a sad result: 「手術のかいもなく、祖父は亡くなった」— always something bad follows.

    How to attach

    • Vた/V辞書形 + かいがあって (待ったかいがあった)
    • N + の + かいがあって (努力の・手術の) — for する-nouns do not say 「努力するの」, just 努力の.
    • Vた/N の + かいもなく

    Versus what you know

    • N3「おかげで」= thanks to someone or something else (先生のおかげで); かいがあって = your own effort bore fruit.
    • 「Vます + がい」(やりがい・生きがい) makes a noun meaning 'worth doing' — it has its own page.

    Watch out

A good result after かいがあって, a bad one after かいもなく — never the reverse (×練習したかいもなく、優勝した).

    しゅじゅつのかいもなく、おじいさんはなくなってしまった。

Despite the operation, my grandfather passed away.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 手術 = operation (a する-N, but not 「手術するの」) → 「の」 → 「かいもなく」 = without any reward → then the sad result: 亡くなってしまった.

    2時間並んだかいがあって、人気のラーメンを食べることができた。

    2じかんならんだかいがあって、にんきのラーメンをたべることができた。
