〜ことなく (~koto naku) — without doing (formal ないで)
The formal, speech-and-news version of ないで・ずに.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- At the office farewell speech: 「これからも変わることなく、ご指導よろしくお願いいたします」— 'please keep guiding me as before (without change)'.
- On the news: 「新幹線は遅れることなく京都に着いた」.
- It is the language of speeches, news and essays — with a slightly dramatic taste ('without resting a single day for 30 years…').
Meaning
- 「〜ことなく」= 'without doing ~'.
- What follows says that another action continued or was completed in that state: 働き続けた・着いた・生涯を終えた.
How to attach
V辞書形 + ことなく — nothing else.
Versus what you know
- N4「〜ないで」(朝ご飯を食べないで来た) is everyday talk.
- N3「〜ずに」(食べずに) is a little literary.
- 「ことなく」is the most formal — all three mean the same, only the level differs.
Watch out
- Never the ない-form (×休まないことなく).
- For small daily things like going to school without breakfast say ないで; ことなく sounds odd chatting with a friend.
