Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
You hear it in speeches, mail and serious talk: 「市長になった以上は、市民の声をよく聞くべきだ」.
Meaning
- 「〜以上(は)」= like 「からには」— 'now that this is decided or a fact, naturally I must, I will'.
- Duty, resolve, wish or request follows: べきだ・つもりだ・なければならない・〜たい.
How to attach
- Plain form + 以上(は): 受ける以上は・なった以上は
- な-adjectives and nouns take 「である」: 社員である以上は
- 「は」can be dropped, leaving 「以上」: 日本で働く以上、…
Versus what you know
「からには」is the everyday spoken one; 「以上(は)」is more serious — speeches and mail; 「上は」is the most formal.
Watch out
No plain description or finished event afterwards — only decision, wish, duty or request.
Also
Do not confuse it with the 以上 of 「100人以上」(more than 100) — here 以上 comes after a verb or clause.

Which sentence is unnatural?
💡 Hint: What follows 以上は?
以上(は) takes duty, resolve, wish or request — not a plain event like 「毎日雨が降った」.

💡 Hint: からには・以上は・上は — the middle level.
からには is everyday speech; 以上(は) is more serious — speeches and mail; 上は is the most formal. からって・ことだし・し are casual.
