〜ことだし (~koto da shi) — since ~ (among other reasons), let's…
The spoken way to float one soft reason before a suggestion or decision.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Sunday morning, sunshine through the window: 「天気もいいことだし、散歩にでも行こうか」— 'the weather is nice too, shall we go for a walk?'.
- It is at home in spoken talk (話し言葉) with friends and family; in shops you hear the polite 「ことですし」: 「値段も安いことですし、お一ついかがですか」.
Meaning
- 「〜ことだし」= before doing something you gently put forward one reason — 'there are other reasons as well, but anyway this one is there, so…'.
- What follows is always the speaker's decision, wish, suggestion or advice — 〜しよう・〜ようか・〜なくちゃ・〜ませんか・〜たらどう?
How to attach
- Verbs and い-adjectives in plain form as they are: 雨もやんだことだし
- な-adjectives with 「な」: 暇なことだし
- Nouns with 「の」: 休みのことだし
- 「である」works in formal speech.
- 「も」usually sits before it (雨も・天気も).
Versus what you know
- N4The 'and there is more' flavour of 「〜し、〜し」lives here.
- 「から・ので」says 'because' head-on; 「ことだし」says it lightly, almost like an excuse.
Watch out
Never a finished fact after it (×安いことだし、たくさん売れた).
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
天気もいいことだし、みんなで公園に行かない?
てんきもいいことだし、みんなでこうえんにいかない?
The weather's nice too, so why don't we all go to the park?
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 天気もいい = the weather is nice too (「も」 says "this is one of the reasons") → い-adj as it is, and we attach 「ことだし」 → then the suggestion: 行かない?

らいげつはやちんのこうしんもあることだし、すこしせつやくしなくちゃ。
The rent renewal is next month too, so I'd better save a little.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 更新もある = there's a renewal too → attach 「ことだし」 directly to the V辞書形 → then my own decision: 節約しなくちゃ.
明日は休みのことだし、今夜は国の家族に電話しようかな。
あしたはやすみのことだし、こんやはくにのかぞくにでんわしようかな。
Tomorrow's a day off too, so maybe I'll call my family back home tonight.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 休み = day off (N) → drop 「だ」 and put 「の」: 休みの → 「ことだし」 → then the wish: 電話しようかな.
