A guess based on someone's character — 'knowing him, surely…'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
Time to meet a friend and he has not shown up. You say 「ラムさんのことだから、また遅れて来るよ」— 'that's Ram for you, he'll be late again'.
Meaning
- 「〜のことだから」= a guess made from what you know of a person's habits, character and usual behaviour: 'I know him, so surely this will happen'.
- After it come the guessing forms you learned at N3: きっと〜だろう・〜はずだ・〜に違いない・〜と思う.
How to attach
- A person's name or word + 「
- Usually a description of the person comes first: 頑張り屋のみち子のことだから, 親切な林さんのことだから, いつも遅刻する彼のことだから
- In speech it can even stand at the end: 「
Versus what you know
N4「から」gives an ordinary reason; here the reason is not an event but the person — 'his character is the reason'.
Watch out
- Mainly people — not weather, companies or things (×
- What follows must be a guess, not a request or an order.
