〜上(は) (~jō (wa)) — in terms of / on (paper, theory, law)
On paper, in law, in theory — but reality is another matter.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- You hear it when paper and reality do not match. At work, to a colleague: 「書類の上では正社員だが、実際の仕事はアルバイトと変わらない」(on paper I am a full-time employee, but the actual work is no different from part-time).
- Walking with a map: 「地図の上では近いのに、歩いたら30分もかかった」.
Meaning
- Attached directly to a noun, 「上」reads 「じょう」and means 'in terms of / seen from that angle'.
- What follows is usually a contrast with reality: 「〜が、実際は…」「〜のに…」.
- A plain judgement like 「健康上よくない」is also common.
How to attach
- N + 上(は/も): 理論上・法律上・健康上・教育上・書類上・表面上・歴史上・計算上・データ上・統計上
- N + の + 上では/上でも: 地図の上では・天気図の上では・書類の上では
Versus what you know
- In N2 Lesson 3 you learned 「〜た上で」(after properly doing) and 「〜上に」(on top of that) — both read 「うえ」.
- Same shape, completely different meaning — the reading 「じょう」of 上 right after a noun is your signal.
Watch out
- It does not go on just any noun, only on words that name a viewpoint — 理論・法律・歴史・教育・健康・表面・書類 and the like.
- 「友達上」「ご飯上」do not exist.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
書類の上では正社員だが、実際の仕事はアルバイトと変わらない。
しょるいのうえではせいしゃいんだが、じっさいのしごとはアルバイトとかわらない。
On paper I am a full-time employee, but the actual work is no different from part-time.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 書類 = documents → we add 「の」: 書類の → 「上では」 (うえでは) → then "but the reality": 〜が、実際は….
法律上は問題ないが、一度店長に相談したほうがいい。
ほうりつじょうはもんだいないが、いちどてんちょうにそうだんしたほうがいい。
Legally there is no problem, but it would be best to check with the manager anyway.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 法律 = law → we attach 「上」 (じょう) directly: 法律上 → 「は」 → then "but…": 〜が.
地図の上では近いのに、歩いたら30分もかかった。
ちずのうえではちかいのに、あるいたらさんじゅっぷんもかかった。
On the map it was close, but walking it took a whole thirty minutes.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 地図 = map → 地図の上では: going by the map → then 「のに」 says the reality was different: 30分もかかった.
Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
「理論_はできるはずだったが、実験では失敗した。」— fill the blank.
💡 Hint: N + _ (read じょう).
理論上は = in theory. 的 would need 「理論的には」(with に); 中 and 下 make no sense here.
In which sentence is 「上」unnatural?
💡 Hint: Is it a viewpoint word?
上(じょう) goes only on viewpoint words like 理論・法律・健康・書類・表面; 友達 is not one.
「法律上は問題ない。」— what is the reading and meaning of 「上」here?
💡 Hint: How is 上 read right after a noun?
上 right after a noun = じょう, 'in terms of': 法律上は = legally speaking. 調べた上で (うえで) = after checking, 上に (うえに) = on top of that — those follow verbs.
