〜からいうと (~kara iu to) — speaking from (a standpoint)
Shows which standpoint you are speaking from — 客の立場からいうと (speaking as a customer).
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
When giving an opinion on a shop, a service or a plan, you show up front which side you speak from: 「客の立場からいうと、この店は駐車場が狭くて不便だ」(speaking as a customer, this shop's car park is narrow and inconvenient).
Meaning
「〜からいうと」= 'speaking from that standpoint' — your own opinion or judgement.
How to attach
- N + からいうと/からいえば/からいって — no verbs or adjectives.
- To bring a person in, add 立場・考え・点: 「客の立場からいうと」「私の考えからいうと」「その点からいうと」
Versus what you know
- N3「〜によると」passes on what others said; からいうと is your own opinion.
- Its brother 「〜から見ると」(seen from) takes a person directly (外国人から見ると); からいうと does not.
- Its other brother 「〜からすると」(judging from) fits best for a guess from signs or evidence.
Watch out
A person cannot stand directly before 「からいうと」— 「× 私からいうと」.
