〜からすると (~kara suru to) — judging from
Your own guess from signs or evidence — 話し方からすると (judging from the way he talks).
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
When you guess from signs or evidence — someone's speech, a face, the sky: 「話し方からすると、関西の人かもしれない」(judging from the way he talks, he may be from Kansai).
Meaning
- 「〜からすると」= 'judging from this' — a guess of your own drawn from evidence.
- What follows is usually a guess: 〜だろう・〜かもしれない・〜ようだ.
How to attach
- N + からすると/からすれば — no verbs or adjectives.
- The て-form 「からして」can carry this same 'judging from' meaning (話し方からして、関西の人だろう) — keep it apart from the 'one thing says it all' からして on the next page.
Versus what you know
- N3「〜によると」passes on what others said; からすると is a guess from your own evidence.
- Its brothers 「から見ると」(seen from) and 「からいうと」(speaking from) do the same job, but for a guess from signs or evidence 「からすると」fits best.
- 「〜からして」on the next page is its sharper brother — 'this one thing says it all', usually with displeasure; からすると is neutral.
