Grow with Kitty

Type in Japanese, kana, romaji or English. Every word and grammar point from N5 to N1.

もっとも (mottomo) — though / mind you

Adding an exception that slightly corrects what you said — 日曜日も開けます。もっとも、午前中だけですが。

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    文1。 + もっとも、 + 文2(例外・条件)。

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

When you add a light 'yes, but…' to what you said: 「旅行に連れて行ってあげるよ。もっとも、合格したらの話だけどね」to a friend.

    Meaning

「もっとも」= 'though / mind you' — you add an exception or condition and slightly correct what you just said: 「検査の前は飲食禁止です。もっとも、水は飲んでもかまいません」.

    How to attach

    • It starts the sentence, with a 「、」after it
    • It often ends with 「〜が」「〜けど」: 午前中だけですが.

    Versus what you know

N3Same job as 「ただし」, but ただし is the stiff voice of rules and notices; もっとも sounds like a light aside — 'yes, but…'.

    Watch out

「最も」'most' (最も高い・最も好きな) is also read もっとも, but that one comes before an adjective; the connector もっとも starts the sentence with a 「、」.

    Examples (उदाहरणहरू)

    日曜日も店を開けます。もっとも、午前中だけですが。

    にちようびもみせをあけます。もっとも、ごぜんちゅうだけですが。

We open the shop on Sundays too. Though only in the morning, mind you.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 店を開けます = we open the shop (the main point) → 「もっとも」 = but one thing → a condition is added as a correction: 午前中だけ.

    検査の前は何も食べないでください。もっとも、水は飲んでもかまいません。

    けんさのまえはなにもたべないでください。もっとも、みずはのんでもかまいません。

Please don't eat anything before the test. Water is fine, though.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 何も食べないで = don't eat anything (the rule) → 「もっとも」 = but one thing → the exception: 水は飲んでもかまいません.

    旅行に連れて行ってあげるよ。もっとも、試験に合格したらの話だけどね。

    りょこうにつれていってあげるよ。もっとも、しけんにごうかくしたらのはなしだけどね。

I'll take you on a trip. Mind you, only if you pass the exam.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 連れて行ってあげる = I'll take you → 「もっとも」 → a condition is added as a correction: 合格したらの話 → 「けど」 at the end.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

    「全員参加です。__、病気の場合は別です。」— fill the blank.

💡 Hint: An exception is being added to the rule just stated.
