Meaning
「それが」= what follows is 'not what you expect, unfortunately'.
How to attach
- It starts the sentence, with a 「、」after it
- Usually at the start of an answer to someone's question, or in your own story when a plan turned upside down.
Versus what you know
- N3In a story it does the job of 「ところが」(= ところが/それなのに) — it reports a plan that went wrong.
- 「それなのに」is more of a complaint; 「それが」has a regretful 'sorry, this is how it turned out' tone.
Watch out
This 「それが」is not the ordinary 「それ+が」('that thing') — it is a connector only when it stands alone at the head of the sentence with a 「、」.
