それなら (sorenara) — in that case

You hear what someone said and decide based on it — 「道が混んでいるらしいよ。」

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

A friend says 「道が混んでいるらしいよ」— hearing that, you give your decision: 「それなら、電車で行こう」.

    Meaning

「それなら」= 'in that case' — you hear what the other person said (or what you just found out) and give your decision, advice or opinion based on it.

    How to attach

    • It starts the sentence, with a 「、」after it
    • Full form: それならば

    Versus what you know

    • With friends 「じゃあ」「それじゃ」do the job; それなら sounds a little more composed.
    • N3「だから」= your own reason → result; それなら = 'if that's so', a decision after hearing someone else.

"Apparently the roads are jammed." "In that case, let's take the train."

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 道が混んでいる = the roads are jammed (what a friend said) → 「それなら」 = in that case → a decision based on that: 電車で行こう.

It seems it will rain tomorrow. In that case, let's finish the shopping today.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 雨らしい = I hear it will rain (hearsay) → 「それなら」 = in that case → a decision based on that: 今日済ませよう (let's finish today).

"I'd like to take tomorrow off…" "In that case, find someone who can work in your place."

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 休みたい = wants a day off (what the employee said) → 「それなら」 = in that case → advice based on that: 代わりの人を探してね.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3
