    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

Talking with friends or colleagues, when you leave the current topic for another: 「今日の授業、面白かったね。それはそうと、次の試験はいつだっけ?」

    Meaning

「それはそうと」= 'by the way' — you pull in a new subject unrelated to what came before.

    How to attach

    • It starts the sentence, with a 「、」after it
    • Spoken language.

    Versus what you know

    • N3The same job as 「ところで」— both are spoken language.
    • 「そういえば」= a related topic the last remark reminded you of; 「それはそうと」= an unrelated topic.

    Watch out

Say 「それはそうと」in a meeting or a speech and you sound too casual — use 「さて」there.
