すなわち (sunawachi) — namely / that is

The same thing under another name — 母の兄、すなわちおじ。

    Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)

    N1/文1 + 、すなわち + N2/文2(同じ内容の言いかえ)

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

In 硬 writing — reports, the news, rules and exam reading passages.

    Meaning

「すなわち」= 'namely' — the same thing under another name: 「母の兄、すなわちおじ」「1,000ミリリットル、すなわち1リットル」.

    How to attach

    • It sits in the middle of the sentence: N、すなわち N
    • It can join two clauses too.

    Versus what you know

N3You met 「つまり」and 「すなわち」together — つまり for speaking, すなわち its 硬 (written) partner.

    Watch out

すなわち says 'A = B' (the same thing under another name) — it is not used for a conclusion inferred from an event: 「財布をなくした。すなわちお金がない」✗; that needs 「つまり」.
