    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

When you hear something and say 'so that means…': 「4

    Meaning

「ということは」= 'that means' — you connect the dots in what you heard or saw and draw your own conclusion.

    How to attach

    • It starts the sentence, with a 「、」after it
    • Your conclusion follows — often with 「〜ということだ」「〜んですね」「〜だろう」.

    Versus what you know

    • N3Close to 「つまり」.
    • 「というのは」= a reason, 「要するに」= a summary; ということは = a conclusion drawn from what you heard.
    • A way to remember: hearing and working it out → ということは, giving your excuse → というのは, wrapping up → 要するに.

He still hasn't come. That means he's off today.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) まだ来ない = still hasn't come (the fact) → 「ということは」 = that means → the conclusion drawn from it: 今日は休み.

"I'll be working in Tokyo from April." "So that means you got the job!"

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 東京で働きます = I'll work in Tokyo (what I heard) → 「ということは」 = that means → the conclusion I draw myself: 就職が決まった.
