というのは (to iu no wa) — the reason is

The outcome first, then the reason —

    Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)

    When to use it

Telling the 店長 you can't come in: 「今日は出勤できません。というのは、父の具合が悪くなりまして……」— fine both when speaking and in email.

    Meaning

「というのは」= 'the reason is' — you state the outcome first and then open the reason.

    How to attach

    • It stands alone at the head of the sentence, with a 「、」
    • The reason ends with 「〜からだ」or 「〜んです」.

    Versus what you know

だ」meaning 'X means…' (a definition); standing alone at the head of a sentence it means 'the reason being'.
    • N3Like 「なぜなら〜からだ」, but softer.
    • 「ということは」= a conclusion, 「要するに」= a summary; というのは = a reason.

    Watch out

    A reason must follow, never a result — 「店が休みだ。

I am going home early today. The reason is, my wife has a fever.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 早く帰ります = I'm going home early (the result first) → 「というのは」 = because → the reason + 「んです」: 妻が熱を出したんです.

I can't attend tomorrow's meeting. The reason is, I have a hospital appointment.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 出られません = I can't attend (the result) → 「というのは」 = because → the reason + 「んです」: 病院の予約がある.

These days I cycle to work. The reason is that I want to save on train fares.

    How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 自転車で通勤している = I cycle to work (the result) → 「というのは」 → the reason + 「からだ」: 節約したいからだ.

    Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)

    Question: 1/3

— fill the blank.

    💡 Hint: A reason with 「〜んです」follows.
