〜だけに (~dake ni) — precisely because / all the more because
'Precisely because it is so' — 「安いだけに、すぐ壊れた」= being cheap, it broke quickly.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
Meaning
- 「〜だけに」= 'precisely because it is so' — what follows is a degree or state that fits the reason, good or bad (安いだけにすぐ壊れた).
- A second flavour, 'all the more because': 「緊張していただけに、隣の人の親切がうれしかった」(precisely because I was nervous, the kindness of the person next to me felt even better).
How to attach
- Plain form + だけに; な-adj takes 「な」, a noun drops 「だ」
- Set phrase: 「年が年だけに」= 'age being what it is'
Versus what you know
- After the previous page's 「〜だけあって」comes a high evaluation (praise); after 「だけに」, good or bad.
- N3「から/ので」only gives a reason; 「だけに」adds 'precisely because' or 'all the more'.
Watch out
A request like 'please do' never follows.
