N という N (N to iu N) — every single N, without exception
The same noun twice — 「店という店」— for 'every single one there is'.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
- Walk to the station on New Year's morning — not one shop is open.
- Telling it with a groan: 「店という店が閉まっていて、何も買えなかった」— every shop there is was shut, not a single one open.
- It works in speech and writing alike.
Meaning
- 「N という N」= the same noun twice with 「という」between — 'every one of that name, one by one, all of them'.
- 「全部の店」「すべての店」also say 'all', but 「店という店」carries the emphasis and the feeling — surprise, annoyance, awe — of 'I looked and not one was left out'.
- It is usually followed by a 'whole' word like 全部・1本残らず・みんな・あふれている.
- It is preceded by a scope: 店中の・この辺の・今年の (この辺の木という木 = every tree around here).
How to attach
N + という + the same N — repeating the identical word is the key.
Versus what you know
- N3Do not confuse it with 「〜という」('called': 田中という人) — here there is no 'called' meaning.
- Nor is it 「AやBといったN」('such as').
Watch out
- Put a different noun (店というコンビニ) and you are back to the N3 'called' meaning.
- Not for ordinary counting ('three shops') — only when you want to stress something big.
