〜に比べて (~ni kurabete) — compared to
Measuring one against another — "this, next to that".
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
Meaning
「〜に比べて」marks the thing you are measuring against: 「去年に比べて、日本語が上達した」= compared with last year, my Japanese has improved.
How to attach
- With a clause it becomes 「〜のに比べて」.
- 「〜と比べて」is the more common variant.
Versus what you know
N5「〜より」also compares, but より states "more/less than" directly, while に比べて has the feel of "taking that as the baseline" — slightly more formal and analytical.
