N を いただきます (N o itadakimasu) — I humbly receive from a higher person
I received something from a higher person — the humble version of もらいます.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
「いただきます」says that I receive something from a higher person. I am the receiver, 私は (usually dropped), the giver takes に or から, and the thing received takes を. It lowers me and raises the other person, so it fits talk about a boss, a teacher or a customer. If what you received came from an organisation such as a company or a school, use から instead of に — 会社から いただきました. The 「いただきます」said before eating comes from this same idea of receiving. Which to pick? If the giver is higher and I am the subject, use いただきます; if the giver is a friend, use もらいます; for the same favour with the higher person as the subject, use くださいます.
