V dictionary form + のに / N + に 〜 (V-jisho + no ni / N + ni ~) — For a use or purpose
The pattern for saying what a thing is used for, or what that job costs you.

To say what something is used for, add のに to the dictionary form of the verb: この はさみは 紙を 切るのに 使います。 A noun does not take のに, just に: この 部屋は 会議に 使います。 Only a small set of words follows it — 使います, いります, かかります, 便利です, いい です and similar "for this job" words. It also works for how much time or money a job takes: 駅まで 行くのに 三十分 かかります。 Do not mix it up with 「ために」: ために states a person goal, while のに states what a thing is good for or what the job costs. Which to pick? Use ために for your own goal. Use のに for what a thing is used for, or how much it takes.
