When to use it
"You may eat here", "May I take a photo?" — when giving and asking permission.
Meaning
- The て-form + もいいです: 食べる ──> 食べて ──> 食べてもいいです (it is fine to eat).
- Literally "even if you eat, it is good", hence も (even) + いい (good).
How to attach
- To ask, add か: 読んでもいいですか (May I read it?).
- To say yes: はい、どうぞ (yes, go ahead); to say no gently: すみません、ちょっと….
