Use 「と言いました」(to iimashita) to report what someone said. Two ways: (1) quote the exact words inside 「」— 「明日来ます」と言いました. (2) summarize with plain form + と — 明日休みだと言いました. Before と you normally use plain form; a noun needs だ.
