Meaning
- てもらいます = to receive the favor of someone doing something.
- The sense of "I got someone to …" also comes from here.
How to attach
The topic (は) is me, the receiver, and the person who does it takes に: 私は先生に名前を書いてもらいました (I had the teacher write my name for me).
Versus what you know
- The difference from てくれます is exactly the くれます／もらいます difference of Lesson 7.
- 先生は私に書いてくれました (teacher as topic) = 私は先生に書いてもらいました (me as topic).
- In both the teacher does it and I benefit — only the viewpoint changes.

How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) The receiver 私 ──> [ + は ] ──> the one who does it, ともだち ──> [ + に ] ──> 本を ──> 買う ──> て-form 買って ──> [ + もらいます ] ──> I receive the favor of my friend buying it for me.
私は母に日本語をおしえてもらいます。
わたしはははににほんごをおしえてもらいます。
I have my mother teach me Japanese.
How it is built (कसरी बन्यो) 私は ──> 母 ──> [ + に ] ──> 日本語を ──> おしえる ──> おしえて ──> [ + もらいます ] ──> I receive the favor of my mother teaching me.
