Meaning
- To say "I do / we do / you do" politely, put ます at the end of the verb.
- It covers both what you do today and what you will do tomorrow — words like 毎日 (every day) or あした (tomorrow) tell which.
How to attach
- How to make it: cut the end of the dictionary form (辞書形) and add ます.
- With る-verbs like 食べる only る drops: 食べる ──> 食べ ──> 食べます.
- With verbs like 飲む／行く the last sound moves to the い-row: 飲む ──> 飲み ──> 飲みます, 行く ──> 行き ──> 行きます.
- The part ending in "い" is called the ます-stem; a lot of grammar from now on attaches to it, so get to know it well.
