Meaning
- は can show the difference between two things.
- Even without the second half, は hints that something else is different — お酒は 飲みません suggests "alcohol I do not drink (other things I do)".
How to attach
- The shape is simple: A は ～ますが、B は ～ません.
- Put は on both sides and join them with が (but).
- を and が drop and は replaces them; に・で・へ stay and become には・では.
Also
は shows up a lot in negative sentences, because a negative usually hides a contrast.
