To build 「〜なさい」, drop ます from the ます form and add なさい. します → しなさい. 書きます → 書きなさい. 寝ます → 寝なさい. The politeness ladder runs: 行け (hardest) < 行きなさい < 行って ください < 行って いただけませんか (most polite). なさい carries a "I am above you" feeling, so parents say it to children and teachers to students. It is the form you see on exam papers and written instructions — 「答えを 書きなさい」, 「正しい ものを 選びなさい」. Never say なさい to a 店長 or a 先輩 at work; your job is to be able to read it.
