普通形 + と 言って いました (futsuukei + to itte imashita) — He / she was saying that ~
The pattern for passing on what someone else said.
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
When to use it
At work, this is the pattern for relaying your 店長 message to a colleague.
Meaning
Use 「〜と 言って いました」to pass on what someone said.
How to attach
- The sentence before と must be in the plain form (普通形), not the ます form: 休みます → 休むと 言って いました.
- Nouns and な-adjectives need だ: 3時からです → 3時からだと 言って いました.
Versus what you know
- The difference from 言いました: 言いました just states the fact that they said it, and suits repeating the exact words — 「ありがとう」と 言いました.
- 言って いました is what you use when carrying someone's words to a third person, and it sounds softer.
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
田中さんは 明日 休むと 言って いました。
たなかさんは あした やすむと いって いました。
Tanaka was saying they would take tomorrow off.
店長は 会議は 3時からだと 言って いました。
てんちょうは かいぎは 3じからだと いって いました。
The 店長 was saying the meeting starts at 3.
山田さんは 「ありがとう」と 言いました。

Knowledge check (मिनी ज्ञान जाँच)
Which correctly relays 「会議は 3時からです」?
💡 Hint: The plain form of です is だ.
A noun needs だ: 3時からだ + と. です never stands directly before と.
Which correctly relays 「田中さんは 明日 休みます」to a colleague?
💡 Hint: The plain form always comes before と.
The plain form of 休みます is 休む, so it is 休むと 言って いました. The ます form never stands before と. 休みなさい is an instruction, "take a rest", so it changes the meaning.
Which fits when telling a colleague what Mr Tanaka said?
💡 Hint: You are carrying words to a third person.
言って いました relays what someone said and sounds softer. 言いました only states the fact.
