伝えます means to pass a message on. When you need someone to tell another person something, use 「〜と 伝えて いただけませんか」. The sentence before と must be in the plain form: 遅れます → 遅れると. 休みます → 休むと. A noun needs だ: 休みです → 休みだと. Who the message goes to is marked with に, as in 「店長に」. The politeness ladder: 〜と 伝えて (with a friend) < 〜と 伝えて ください (normal) < 〜と 伝えて いただけませんか (with a boss or a customer). This is the sentence you will use most when you phone in late or sick.
