〜に 行きます/来ます/帰ります (~ ni ikimasu / kimasu / kaerimasu) — go / come / return (somewhere) to do …
Not just where you go, but what you go there to do — "I go to …".
Formula (सूत्र ढाँचा)
Grammar rule (व्याकरण नियम र परिभाषा)
Meaning
- To say what you go to do: drop ます from the verb, add に, then 行きます/来ます/帰ります.
- 買います ──> 買い ──> 買いに行きます (I go to buy).
How to attach
- To say the place too, the place takes へ and the action takes に: スーパーへパンを買いに行きます (I go to the supermarket to buy bread).
- With します verbs like 勉強します and 買い物します you can drop します and keep only the noun: 日本語の勉強に来ました (I came to study Japanese), 買い物に行きます (I go shopping).
Versus what you know
In Lesson 5 we learned 学校へ行きます (I go to school) — that said where you go; this says what you go to do.
Watch out
This に is always followed by a movement verb (行きます・来ます・帰ります).
