「N のとき」expresses a time or situation, "at the time of N" or "when N." A noun connects to 「とき」with 「の」— こどものとき (when a child), 休みのとき (on a day off). With a verb, however, no 「の」is used; the plain form attaches directly (e.g. 行くとき).
Examples (उदाहरणहरू)
こどものとき、よくここであそびました。
kodomo no toki, yoku koko de asobimashita.
When I was a child, I often played here.
休みのとき、何をしますか。
yasumi no toki, nani o shimasu ka.
What do you do on your days off?
びょうきのとき、びょういんへ行きます。
byouki no toki, byouin e ikimasu.
