Position words show where something is. They usually appear in the pattern 「N の [position] に」. The key words are: 上 (ue, above), 下 (shita, below/under), 前 (mae, in front), 後ろ (ushiro, behind), 中 (naka, inside), 外 (soto, outside), 右 (migi, right), 左 (hidari, left), となり (tonari, next to), 近く (chikaku, near). e.g. つくえの 上に 本が あります (tsukue no ue ni hon ga arimasu) = 'There is a book on the desk.'

tsukue no ue ni hon ga arimasu.
There is a book on the desk.
いえの 前に 車が あります。
ie no mae ni kuruma ga arimasu.
There is a car in front of the house.
ぎんこうは コンビニの となりに あります。

The bank is next to the convenience store.
